Keno is a game of chance! And with each game the numbers are chosen by random number generators (RGN). This means that each game when played is similar to the game of roulette, where the numbers chosen are completely independent from previous games. As a result there is little keno strategy which can be used to help increase your chances of winning.

There is, however, information which will be useful to the player that will certainly make the game more enjoyable. Here are simple Keno strategies to follow:

With most Keno games the player can choose between 1-15 numbers. As you can see in the schedule above the fewer numbers which are chosen the easier it is to match all of your spots, however, the payout will be lower and therefore remove the incentive of playing.

Secondly, the more numbers played the easier it will be to match at least some numbers chosen.
Again unless a significant number of matches are obtained the payout is going to be low.
Therefore, one should try to reach a balance and play between 4 and 8 numbers. This will takeaway the extremes of choosing too few and too many numbers where the probabilities/odds of winning are 1 in a million or higher. As an example, 15 matches out of 15 spots your odds of winning are 1 in over 400 billion.

3.) Selecting the correct numbers

As already mentioned the results of prior games will not impact the outcomes of future events. However, some players employ the following strategies believing that a balance of probabilities will increase their chances. These include:

a.) Playing the numbers which have not come up in recent games. This works on the theory that the numbers will come up to even out the long-term results in the pool of Keno numbers.

b.) Rather than betting the numbers that have not come up, players will choose numbers which have come up in recent games. This method is following trends and patterns with randomly drawn numbers where if you can hit a winning streak can be profitable.

The game of Bingo originated from France and Italy in the 1500s, the history of Keno dates back to China’s Han Dynasty. The games popularity arose out of the ruler Cheung Leungs’ necessity to finance a war at the time. Military finances were running low and the citizens were not accepting of funding the war further. A mathematical game that had recently been invented named "The White Pigeon Game" was introduced. It was nick named "The White Pigeon Game" do to the fact that the results were transferred to each city via Pigeions.

Keno tickets started out using 120 characters. Players made 10 selections, which were marked using an ink brush, which lead to today's term, "Keno Spots." The game was said to be so popular that its funds were also used to build the Great Wall of China.

The Chinese version of the game was introduced to the West by Chinese immigrants who migrated to North America to find work building the American trans-continental railroad in the 19th century. At this time the game in America was called the "Chinese lottery". The game proved to be quite popular and was called "horse race keno" making it appear as if the numbers referred to horses. This was a means of getting around the strict gambling laws of the time.

The Chinese symbols were eventually replaced with numbers and, more to the player's benefit, the 120 characters reduced to only eighty. This version of Keno if the one seen today.

Keno CardsPlaying the game of keno is very easy at its very similar to playing the Lotto and Bingo as the same concepts are involved. Keno is relatively straightforward and is offered in a number of varieties.

The objective of Keno is for the player to guess which numbers, from 1 to 80, will be randomly selected by the Keno random number generator or machine. Each time the game is played, the player chooses 1 to 15 numbers as well as the amount of the bet. The machine will then randomly select 20 numbers. The objective is to have as many matches as possible between the numbers chosen and those randomly selected by the machine. The player is paid out on how many of the players numbers match the numbers drawn out by the keno's random number generator.

The player begins by designating the numbers they want on the Keno board. You may also be given the option of having the computer select a random 10 numbers for you. When a number is chosen it turns will turn a different color to that of the rest of the board. If you want to de-select a number, click on it a second time. The screen should also show the potential payoff in one corner as more numbers are chosen.

When a player's number matches it is called a "Hit." The payoff in Keno also depends upon whether you bet the minimum or maximum bet.

Next you can select to play either 1 game of Keno or perhaps you may want to play a group of 4-5 games all in one go. The pace of this is much faster online than playing in land based casinos.

Different Types of Keno Cards

Not all Keno cards are as explained above. To keep the Keno game players interested and to change the odds, online casinos have begun using different types of cards for selection.
Popular cards include:

1.) A Way Ticket – allowing players to choose many sets and therefore, less money to play than straight tickets.

2.) A Split Ticket – This allows players to draw a line through the middle section of a card and then to mark the numbers on each side of this line. Play two games with the one ticket with less of a payout.

There are however exceptions if the player manages to successfully match a smaller set of numbers they will be entitled to a fraction of the jackpot.
