What is a Slot Machine?

slot machine illustrationSlot machines are a type of casino game that are also referred to as fruit machines in British English and poker machines in Australian English. Traditional slot machines tend to be coin operated machines that have at least three reels that spin when a lever is pulled. Slot machines typically pay off based on a variety of different symbol patterns that are visible on the front of the machine. Today slot machines are easily the most popular of all gambling methods in casinos, constituting more than 70 percent of an average casino's income.

Brief History of Slot Machines

The first gambling machine, a precursor to our modern slot machine, was developed in 1891 by Sittman and Pitt from Brooklyn, New York. This gambling machine was based on poker, and had five drums that held fifty card faces. Players would insert a nickel and pull a lever, spinning the drums and the cards that they held. If the poker player got a good hand, he or she may win a free beer, cigars, or drinks, depending on the establishment hosting the gambling machine.

Many of today's symbols were derived from another early machine, which gave out fruit flavored chewing gums, and the fruit symbols on the machines' reels were the flavors. The BAR symbol that is common in modern day slot machines came from an early logo from the Bell Fruit Gum Company.

The first fully electro-mechanical slot machine was invented in 1964 by Bally. This machine, called the Money Honey, was the first machine that offered a bottomless hopper and an automatic payment function that could pay out up to 500 coins without requiring the assistance of an attendant. Today there are a variety of different types of slot machines, including video poker slot machines that are modernized forms of some of the more original gambling machines, are multi-line slots with more than just a single payline.

It is also common for modern day slot machines to be based on television shows and other themes, such as the Addams Family, or I Dream of Jeannie. Many new have been released in recent years that allow for multi denomination playing, or tokenization which allows a single token to buy more than a single credit.

Technology Behind Slot Machines

Modern computer technology implemented in slot machines has given way to a variety of new slot machine concepts and growing innovation in slot machine capabilities. Modern slot machines are completely computerized, so the odds are based on however they are programmed. The reels and the lever are only present for entertainment purposes, and the reel positions are chosen based on a RNG or Random Number Generator.

The RNG is constantly generating numbers randomly at a rate of hundreds or even thousands of numbers per second. The most recent random number is chosen as soon as the lever is pulled, and the result is determined accordingly. Some random number generators are actually PRNGs or Pseudorandom number generators, which means that their number sequence will eventually be repeated.

In addition to the player understanding the basics of 5-card draw they must understand there are differences between live poker and video poker. For example, with video poker players need not concern themselves with bluffing, keeping what is called a “kicker” (holding an extra card in order to hide that the player discarding cards has a pair), and a 3-of-a-kind is the same in video poker regardless of its card ranking of a 3, 8, or even a King. The player receives the same payout for any pair.

In relation to 5 Card Draw it is important to know the odds of receiving a particular hand from the original drawing. This will give you an understanding of what is achievable when striving for a particular hand.

Rankings of Hands

Original dealt Hand Odds of Receiving a Hand
Royal Flush 1 in 665,000
Straight Flush 1 in 73,000
Four of a kind 1 in 4200
Full House 1 in 700
Flush 1 in 500
Straight 1 in 250
Three of a kind 1 in 50
Two Pair 1 in 21
High Pair 1 in 8
Low Pair 1 in 3
No Pair 1 in 2

Frequency of Hands

Hand Payout Frequency
Royal Flush 4,000 1 in 40,390
Straight Flush 250 1 in 9,148
Four of a kind 125 1 in 423
Full House 45 1 in 86
Flush 30 1 in 90
Straight 20 1 in 89
Three of a kind 15 1 in 13
Two Pair 10 1 in 7
Jacks or Better 5 1 in 4

Therefore, with an understanding of the above odds the player can determine the correct decision of how to play the hand originally drawn.

Basic Strategy

Initial Hand Decision
4 of a kind draw none
4 card royal draw 1
Full House draw none
Flush draw none
3 of a kind draw 2
4 card straight flush draw 1
Straight draw none
2 Pair draw 1
Pair (Jacks or Better) draw 3
3 card royal draw 3
4 card flush draw 1
Low Pair draw 3
4 card straight draw 1
3 card straight flush draw 2
2 card royal(10, no ace draw 3
1 high card (J,Q,K,A) draw 4
Mixed low cards draw 5

It is important that the player understands how a machines payout schedule affects the odds of the player. This is crucial to succeeding at video poker. The payout schedule should consist of at least these minimum components.

video poker pay scale

Looking at the first column for betting 1 unit this should read:

a.) returns of the players original bet for a pair of Jacks or better

b.) A payout of 9 units for a full house and 6 units for a flush. This is called a Jacks or better 9/6 and has a higher payout than an 8/5 or 7/5 etc.

c.) A non-progressive machine that pays out at least 4000 units for a royal flush if the maximum coins are played.

The following are the odds between the different machines relating to their payout schedules.

Odds of different machines

Machine Payout
10/7 (double bonus) 100.2%
9/7 100.7%
9/6 99.5%
8/5 97.3
7/5 96.3%
6/5 95.2%

poker handsVideo Poker is a skill based game where the player has some degree of control over the outcome. By choosing the right machine and selecting the correct amount to bet, and using basic strategy the player has excellent odds against the house.

The basics of Video Poker are quite simple to master. This brings into play the basics of 5-card draw. After the insertion of coin(s) push the play or deal button. The 5 cards will be dealt where at this point the player decides, which cards to hold by pressing the button below the cards they wish to hold. The player can choose to hold all five of the cards or none at all. After this choice has been made the player presses the deal button a second time and the new cards which have not been held are dealt. If the player has a strong enough result (hand) they will be awarded the payout according to the payout chart.

Basic strategy of Video Poker comes into play where the player must choose the cards to discard. Also an understanding of the odds of getting a potential hand and the value of going for a higher hand is essential. Go to our Basic Strategy session to learn more…
